A business plan consists of three main parts: 1. The history of your farm 2. The present state of your farm – physically, financially, and staff wise 3. The future state of your farm – where you want to be in the short term (2-5 years) and long term (5 to 10 years) and also in terms of the physical size, financial situation and the size and strength of your staff. To prepare a proper business plan requires all the members of the farm family or the management team to participate and share their thoughts and ambitions for the future. Art can help this process by being a facilitator. Once the goals of each member are known, they should be written down and a plan for the future (short term and long term) developed incorporating those goals. Art can then prepare financial projections for several options to determine the viability and desirability of each one. When the preferred option for the future has been identified by the family or team Art can prepare a course of action for that one and help approach lenders if financing is required.
